Newbies HC Posted July 20, 2006 Newbies Posted July 20, 2006 Hi, I'm fairly new to Filemaker and i'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to put this but, I am making a database where in a certain layout, I want to have fields and a portal to be shown/hidden or expanded/collapsed using a checkbox. So if the checkbox is checked, I would like for selected fields and a portal in the layout to be expanded/shown and if it is not, to be hidden/collapsed. I was hoping someone could kindly help me out here. Much thanks in advance.
MRH Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Hi HC, A very very quick example for you…hope this is what you were looking for & helps. Mark CheckBox_Show.fp7.zip
Newbies HC Posted July 21, 2006 Author Newbies Posted July 21, 2006 Hi Mark Thanks for your help. However, I believe I might not have been as clear when I read my inital message again. In excel, you can collapse/expand rows/groups by selecting the rows and going to data-->group and outline-->group. This gives a button on the side that allows one to expand/collapse or show/hide or group/ungroup the tables. As I am new to filemaker pro,I was wondering if there was a way to do this in filemaker in a layout by checking a checkbox or a radio set. Much thanks for your help in adavance.

Newbies HC Posted July 21, 2006 Author Newbies Posted July 21, 2006 Hi Phil, Thanks for your help on my collapsing/expanding question. It is exactly what I wanted. Sorry to bother futher but i am fairly new at filemaker pro and I am having trouble figuring out how field 2 dissapeared. Is there somehting that allows you to select a specific area to dissapear? Thanks.
Inky Phil Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 HI HC No problem. Glad to be of help. Go into layout mode and in the area of field 2 you will see what is known as a portal. A portal is an area that will display information that is related in some way. Changing the yes/no box sets and unsets the relationship thereby displaying/not displaying the related info. Read up on portals in the help section. They are good tools to have in your box. Any further questions by all means get back HTH Phil
Newbies HC Posted July 24, 2006 Author Newbies Posted July 24, 2006 Thanks for all your help Phil. I was able to make the portal cover all the fields in the table; however, i was also trying to cover/hide another portal that was already in the layout. At the moment, when i toggle the radio button, the fields dissapear/appear but the portal continues to remain visible. Is there a method fo the blank portal to also cover up the initial portal?
Inky Phil Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Not Directly since you cannot have one portal contained within another. What you can do(If I understand you correctly) is establish another relationship to the detail that is in your older portal and base it on the criteria that applies to your new portal. That way you can show the first set of related material in the new portal and perhaps have a 'more' button to take you to another layout should the user wish to explore the 'existing' data. You do not have to discard the existing relationships to do this. This is not a technique I have used but just my initial thoughts (ramblings?) about your problem HTH Phil
Inky Phil Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 HC I stumbled across this thread http://filemakertoday.com/filemakertoday.com_non_ssl/com/showthread.php?t=10038 after my last post. Don't know if it is relevant but it might be Phil
