formatting an input field

Featured Replies

first of all good morning. yesturday I posted 2 questions and got answers - so this forum works great.

now for my very basic question:

I want that when user enters a field value - there will be a manipulation on that value and the field will contain something a bit different than what the user typed.

when it was easy I just used the field format.

but when I need a calculation (like phone number) I dont know the procedure to do it:

I believed I need to create 2 fields - one for the input and than a "calculated" one for the formated value. is that true?? (i hope not)

if so than what should I do on the layout? put them on on another???

thanks.

You can attache a calculation to a field as Auto Enter that will correct the data entry.

In other words, the user could enter the data as 555 555 55555 and the field can correct it to be (555) 555-55555 is that what you mean? If so, look at the link I posted here

thanks, lee.

It worked.

Is there any book you would reccomend for FM learning?

There have been some good ones recommended in the Resource Topic and User Group Central - Sponsored by FMPug.com, so take a look at the long lists of videos, books, etc. recommend there my the members.

I recently purchased the [color:blue]FileMaker 8 Functions and Scripts Desk Reference book, that came highly recommend by [color:red]FMPug.com that has a lot in it that could be helpful to you.
