I have a database of 400+ patients.

A researcher that I work with has a long list of patients names in an excel file, and he wants me to check to see whether or not we already have each of these patients in the Filemaker database.

Does anyone know how I could do this type of comparison?

the problem with names is people don't spell them accurately or consistently -

nonetheless, you can certainly do what you want - import the names into your fm file (or a copy of them). Add a field to "mark" them as the imported records - find duplicate records.
