(Newbie?) Sequentially Numbered Backup

Hi,

What I am attempting to do with a script (without any success so far) is for the db backup to be created in a designated folder and have a sequential number.

The db will be a small one and multiple progressive copies will not be a strain on the HD.

Example(where Trumpet is the db name):)

Trumpet.FM7

Trumpet1.FM7

Trumpet2.FM7

Etc.

I was told this could be done, but have not found any outside information on how to accomplish a script such as this and the scripts I have attempted will not work.

I would like this to happen without any user input other than pressing a "Backup" button.

Does anyone know how this can be done, or a link to a solution?

Thanks for you time,

Jim

I think someone recently posted their batch scripts for doing this in Windows (check the Articles or Samples forums). The same thing can be done in OSX with cron jobs.

Both of these are OS operations. The files MUST be closed for the resulting backups to work correctly.

Personally, I use Server with its automated backups.

Hi,

There was a post on how to do this, but I cant seem to find it, I cant remember what forum it was on, and I think I have searched them all in the last few days :) .

It was not an OS operation, they wrote a script that would do just what I have attempted to explain. it was just like the backup script that comes with the program but it created the BU in a different folder with an attached number.

(I did ask one of the guys from the Moyer Group about this and they said it was possible, but then he got distracted, and I did not get a chance to follow up on it).

I saw the script and thought it was neat, but as a newbie I thought what the heck would I need that for...and now (as is usually the case) I would like to be able to have that script for a db I am working on.

This db will not be on a server, so I can't do a server backup.

Thanks,

Jim

Well, I have a hard enough time remembering the stuff I'VE seen, I can't remember the stuff YOU'VE seen too! The one I was thinking of is sitting at the top of the Sample Files forum.

Yep, I saw that post also during my two day search.

Well, I guess from now on when I see something I think is neat I need to get a copy of it.

Oh the joys of being a newbie.

Thanks,

Jim
