I am using Filemaker Server 8 Adv. to server some database file(s) i am currently developing on. This is rather convinient for me so people can already use parts of the System i am developing, and i am sure that my work is correctly backed up based on the schedules i set. But is working (defining fields, accounts, creating layouts etc) via a remote lan client on server hosted files safe to do? are there issues i need to be aware of?

I don't know too much about running it on Mac, but my server is located in Florida and my company is in Japan. I have done all my design while my files are "live." I have done as much as 100 additions, script fixing, relationship work, ect... The only problem I have seen is sometimes the status bar toggles when a script is run after I have done some maintence on that layout that is part of the script. Nothing major. I don't know if this is what you are asking or if you are asking if it is secure or not.

No great problems, except with FMP 5 I cannot define new fields, whereas you can.

The most likely thing you will do is lose some data or overwrite some because a script is badly coded. These days I tend to test some of my stuff locally, then re-do the work on the main system.

I would generally avoid making deep level schema changes over a WAN connection, especially where they involve the Relationship Graph. If the conenction drops, chance are very significant that the Graph will be permanently damaged.
