Older versions including FileMaker 7 should work in Rosetta, but I haven't tested it. As for your second question: yes. 8.5 was designed for Intel Macs, and is a must for any serious FileMaker user.

I would enthusiastically second Fitch's statement. 8.5 is amazingly fast and stable on an Intel Mac (iMac Core Due). Rosetta is OK, I was running 8 on it (don't have 7 on this machine, but I imagine it'd be fine); I'm still running FileMaker 6 on it (when I have to). But 8.5 runs like a dream.
