My Portal isn't working properly!!

I am attempting to display a variety of dates which are entered through fields with drop down menus. I want the user to be able to select certain date "types" select the date and time, and then press a button which displays a list of the entered dates and related types and times in a portal which Is sorted by date. I have managed to write a script which creates a new record in a related table and displays the info correctly, however when you then change one of the drop down options it changes the item in the portal. I guess I'm missing a final step in the script which includes a "do not edit" from this field (I'm hoping you could still edit the portal field in the portal itself) Any help would be appreciated!
