SoCalMacDude Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 When I try to open any FM8.5 database on any remote drive, FileMaker 8.5 errors that it cannot open this file (Not Found). However, I can copy the file to the local drive and open it, I can even delete it from the remote drive through the file sharing, but I cannot open it. I tried creating a new file from a FM template, dragged it onto the hard drive of 2 different Macs on the network, same behavior on all FM 8.5 files on all Macs. Filemaker 6 files work fine. What's up with that??
Ender Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 :badidea: Do not open files that reside on a shared network volume, that's a good way to corrupt the file. If you wish to have multi-user access of a solution, the files must NOT reside in shared directory, and only be opened by the local client. The client can then "host" the solution using FileMaker's built-in Sharing ability, with remote users connecting via "Open Remote" or a local launcher file.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Filemaker 6 files work fine. What's up with that?? [color:red]It doesn't work that way anymore. Plus there may be an OS level file permissions issue. Heed Ender's advice too. It's good advice. Steven
SoCalMacDude Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 Got it, guys!!! After I posted I decided to share the database and log in remotely - MUCH smarter! Next issue is FM8 Server - I see files are in MacHD:Library:FileMaker Server:Data:Databases. Permisions for that folder were Owner: fmserver Group: fmsadmin and when I login to a database, even as admin, I could not make any changes. I changed those permissions to admin for both, which allowed changes. I'm afraid I'm making things insecure. How is this intended to work? Thanks!
Steven H. Blackwell Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Group ownership should be fmsadmin with read and write privileges. Go under the Get Info on the files hosted and expand the Ownership and Permission tab to set this. Close the files and stop the FMS daemon before doing this. Steven
Ender Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 The group for the files and the directory should be 'fmsadmin' to work correctly. I don't know why you seem to be having luck with 'admin'. :qwery:
