Hello,

I am relatively new to FM and am setting up a contact database. Contacts can either be individuals, families or corporations/organizations. My problem is with the families. Each family record is linked to individual related records. I can set that up, but my question has to do with when I need to set up a mailing list/find. Is there a way to eliminate the individuals that are part of a family in the mailing list or find, thereby eliminating duplicate mailings?

Thanks, MT

Start by determining a field that uniquely links the families. Family name might do it but maybe not since "Smith" is a common name. Hopefully, there is some field in your database that uniquely links the family records like a key field. Once you have that field, create a new layout for printing. Or, maybe you already have this layout. The point is, use a subsummary part instead of a body part. The subsummary requires a sort or break field which you will identify as the field that groups your family records. When you go to print, start by sorting by the break field and only one of each record grouping will print.

There are other ways to identofy unique records but this is the easiest method if all you need to do is print.

Take a look at this template, that uses exactly Johns kind of reasoning:
