tv_kid Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I'd like to take the idea of highlighting find requests a step further. I've been looking at Ray Cologon's custom function, and Ryan Brandys' custom function, but can't work out how to use a return delimited list of values in conjuction with these. Basically I want to be able to highlight multiple search terms in a field when perfoming a find request, or multiple requests. Hope this makes sense. Any information gratefully received as I'm struggling over where to start! Thanks
Genx Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Sorry, highlighting in what way? And what sort of find request are you performing, one in browse mode using globals or an actual request in find mode.
tv_kid Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 Sorry, I'm guilty of assuming everyone else knows what I'm thinking! I have a library of books, with a field for a synopsis of the book. I'd like users to be able to search for certain words within this synopsis field (and other fields such as title etc) and highlight the search terms in the results. I also need to allow multiple find requests as well as 'AND', 'OR' operators etc. Using either of the custom functions (or a formula with the Substitute function) with a global field as the 'search criteria', I can set up a calc field to 'highlight' the search term if it is a single word or series of words, but I can't work out how to do so if my search criteria are evaluated to produce a global field with multiple values. Does any of this make any sense?
comment Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I have just now posted a couple of custom functions on Brian Dunning's site that seem like what you need. They are a bit elaborate in order to match regardles of case, and still return the hilited text in the original case. If you don't need this feature, it can be MUCH simpler.
tv_kid Posted October 4, 2006 Author Posted October 4, 2006 Once again I am blown away by the generosity and speed of response on these forums. Comment, your custom functions have saved my an absolute age of painstaking 'messing about' trying to work this out. The words "I'm not worthy" spring to mind. Thank you. I have been putting off becoming a paid subscriber to these forums for some time, but this has just tipped the balance. The amount of time and effort your custom functions will save me more than off-sets the subscription fee. Thanks once again.
Genx Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Hmmmmm, simple, admitidly hard to instantly wrap your head around, but incredibally timesaving. It'll make search results a lot more usefull to the user, cheers comment!
