Fields not printing

I have a simple layout for printing including a modification date and some portal items in the body of the layout -- the Format > Set Slinding and Printing for al the field are not checked.

I can't see these items in Preview or in Print Preview but can another field -- I have a similar layout for another table and it workd great; is there something in 8/8.5 I don't know about?

I know that this seems too obvious for words but there is a value in the fields isn't there?

Crazy as it seems, I created a new field for notes and when I returned to the layout in Preview mode, the missing fields appeared.

Dunno....?!:!!!
