i don't even know how to call this but what need is a field that i can add a day/month/year and have a warning valadation message appear 11 months in the future to remind someone of an expiration date. any clues.

I think your best bet is to use a script to search for the records. You could have this run when you click a button or automatically each time you open the file. The basic idea is to construct find criteria locating records in the future. I have an example file that demonstrates how to locate overdue invoices but is exactly the same concept as your alarm just farther in the future.
