Server8 with Dynamic IP

Hi,

I am new in FMP, just want to know whether it is poosible to use dynamic IP with Server 8, I have seen from many post saying it is best to use static, but Static IP in China is way too expensive, appreciate any help for the problem.

Thanks.

If your users are on the local network, then you only need to have a static IP within your private network. Generally, a company only needs a few real static IPs for accessibility from the outside (for web servers, email servers, and if you're hosting your database to the outside, then you'll need one for that too). Otherwise, all your internal addresses should be private addresses. Routers and firewalls create such a private network when you set them up using NAT. For those few machines that need to be accessible from the outside, a static route, one-to-one mapping, or even port mapping may be used to allow the connection to that service.

Thanks Ender for your clear explanation.

I wander weather is it possible to use service like No-ip.com & Dyn.org would work, I have use it before for the Filemaker pro 8 IWP.

May be Server 8 is totally different architect.

Those services will work. But I want to re-iterate what Ender is saying: make sure your network architecture is correct.

The FMS machine would normally have just an internal IP address, a static one. That's what you've been reading but it has nothing to do with connecting to it from the internet.

For internet connectivity your router/firewall will also have a static internal IP address and will have an external (public) IP address assigned to you by your ISP. For best results that public one should be static too. But if that's not possible then a service like dyn.org will work.
