hi!

Sorry if this is NOT the right forum to post my question!

I've been a member for a while but this is my first question..thanks in advance.

I 'm a teacher trying to design a timetable for my school.

it's a sort of a 5-day weekly plan where teachers can enter info about what they are going to teach throughout the week (lesson title and book page) ...Now if a teacher has two groups of students he can enter the same information for the two groups togther..( sometimes 2 teachers are entering the same info since they happen to teach the same level)

One more question ... if one teacher (say science teacher) is giving a test on a certain day NO OTHER teacher of any subject can give another test THAT is ... ONE TEST PER DAY...

I would like to pass my gratitude and thanks in advance.... You are doing a great job guys...

Welcome to Land of the Living, shadi.

I'm afraid your question lacks clarity (I don't actually see a question there :) ). Maybe you can be a little more specific about the kind of help you're actually looking for. You've posted this in the FileMaker Server Advanced section, which is generally about how to do the Server configuration or about the Server Advanced product specs, but your statements seem to be about relational structure or scripting or something...

Thanks Ender... for your reply... it's like seeing a flash of light at the end of the tunnel.

Sorry. I realised that i posted in the wrong forum. this should have been perhaps in forum: Database Schema & Business Logic

I think NOW that it's all about organisation and data entry.

I started with the "time cards" template that comes with filemaker 8.5 added some modifications:

the purpose is to give each students a report (before the week starts) summarising what the courses are and when he is going to have a test.

The teacher (or teachers) would start with a new weekly plan .. She/he would enter information about what she/he is going to teach for each of the next five days including exams ... Now if the teacher is teaching two groups of students how can this teacher enter information for 2 of her groups at the same time... In other words she doesn"t have to enter info for Group 1 a and then does the same thing with group 1 b.

Excuse me for being confused .I need some guidance and tips or should I post in another forum?

It sounds like you're looking for a Student-Enrollment system, that includes Assignments and possibly Grades and Scheduling. I must tell you that a solution like this is quite complex for a beginner.

With such a broad topic, there's a lot of ways to design it. We can help with the general structure, or even solve specific dilemmas, but you're the one who's working with the client, so you will need to figure out the overall plan. I'd suggest you read up on relational structure, so you know how to identify Entities (tables) and Relationships. You can then search for +student +enrollment or other similar terms, and see past discussions about how to structure different parts of these solutions.

Keep in mind that understanding the client requirements is an essential first step in designing a solution. You need to understand the workflow for each person who will be interacting with your database, including what data they should and should not have access to, so you can design the structure, processes, and security appropriately.

Once you have the requirements figured out and you understand a little about relational design, hopefully you'll be able to work out a basic relational schema, with tables and relationships.

If you have further questions, it will help us to know what your current structure is, and possibly see a clone of your file, or at least a screenshot of the relationship graph.
