REGGIE MAGER Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 OK I understand the basic concepts of the conditional value list. But I still can't seem to be able to filter on TWO conditions. In my Cars database I can lists my years and using the conditional value list I can narrow down my car MAKES to the specified YEAR. But when I try this technique with my MODELS it shows all my models for the MAKE. I need to be able to filter this somehow so that my dropdown list for MODELS shows only the models available for the make and year selected. And then I need to filter my engines by year, make and model. I'm new to building databases and any help would be appreciated. Seems like there should be a built-in filtering system that lets you filter by more fields than one. Thanks for the help.
John Mark Osborne Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 If you have duplicate values across your categories, it's a little trickier to get the job done. Here are two examples files that demonstrate the difference. Archive.zip
Daniel Shanahan Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Is it possible to explain this a little more explicitly? I have scoured the value list posts but all the responses are short. One person suggested creating a global field and creating a relationship from that. Like the original poster here, I have need of multiple filters (hierarchical). I want the user (an elementary school teacher) to select a content standard mandated by the state department of education (in this case, California). I have three tiers: an Area (English, Math, History, etc), a Subject (if English then Reading, Writing, Listening, etc.), and a Topic (if Reading then Word Analysis, Reading Comprehension, Literary Response, etc). Once these have been selected by the user (I have it in a dedicated Find layout) the user will be directed to a list view of the found set and from there can make a selection. In the case of educational competencies, the hierarchy or tier system can go to five levels (at least in this case). I've spent most of the day trying to understand this concept, but I must admit that it eludes me. The examples here are great. I am looking for more explanation. Also, although I John Mark Osborne's MANY contributions of "Tips and Tricks," the one here was slightly confusing in that the example of the auto included a Countries_province table in the relationship window. Thanks. Dan
