This one baffles me:

The initialization script is OFF.

(no scripts running on file options Open/close)

... yet, when opening the file the records come in sorted and the sort dialog contains a sorting field.

... I clean up that sorting dialog. Close the file. Then, open the file and again that sorting field is still active.

What is it possibly that I miss ?

hmm, I did a "save as" (saving as a different filename). Then, after re-opening it, the problem was gone (both from the copy and the original file)

That was really weird.

(I will consider it solved for now)

... why not just use the unsort script step?

True, true : ... but where was it getting its sorting instruction (this was the spooky part)

Probably previously stored after maybe a report? It seems to stick with what you had last time so i more often than not add an unsort records script step immediatley after i've finished generating my reports.
