Filemaker Server and Web Companion

Ok, I've looked everywhere and can't find the answer to the following:

How do I view a database in my web browser which is being hosted on a (Windows) Filemaker Pro Server (v5)?

Is it possible, and if not, how should one be going about it? Can someone point me in the right direction please.

Depends on what you mean by "a FileMaker Pro server". If you mean a file hosted by FileMaker Server, you can't do that. FileMaker Server does not support web browsers a a guest. Only FIleMaker Pro and FileMAker Pro Unlimited support that.

If using either of these, be sure the network protocol is set to TCP. The file need NOT be set to multiuser. be sure the file is open with a password permitting export. Then be sure the web companion is configured. Edit-->Preferences-->Application-->PlugIns. THen be sure the file is set to companion sharing for the WC.

Thanks - looks like I'll have to get Unlimited as I want to be able to allow guest users (who don't have FM Pro) have access to parts of my database(s) through their browsers.

Ideally I would like to be in a situation where I can utilise FM Server to host the databases and allow others to access them without me having to host them locally on my machine AND make use of the scheduled backups and resilience of Server AND serve them over the web. Is this feasible???

Seems a bit bizarre that all the Filemaker lit. doesn't explain the differences in these terms - but then maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

Thanks again

Haven't done this myself, but apparently one of the FMI-approved web set-ups involves having FMP Server serve the databases to one or more FMP Unlimited machines on a RAIC, which in turn serve the data to the web.

Sounds like a peach to set up!

You might take a look on the FMI web site for additional information on this topic of FMPU configuration.

Basically, if you want BOTH LAN/WAN and browser access:

FM Server--->FMPU--->web browsers

or

FM Server---->multiple copies of FMPU--->web server such as Apache--->browsers

There are other configurations of course, but these are the most common and the most effective. DO NOT try to serve to web browsers from a user's workstation.
