navigating back and forwards from history?

i am trying to think of how to allow a user to navigate < and > through the last say 5 layouts visited similar to a web browsers back and forward buttons, and ideas?

so far im thinking of variables or some form of list.

thanks peeps for the replies sorry for delay, my little 9 week boy has been very ill, back at home now so will look into this thanks...
