FileMaker 2026 Released

This action cannot be performed because this field is not modifiable.

Featured Replies

I'm trying to write a script that will let me sort by the date column, but when I click on the button I get a message that says, "This action cannot be performed because the field is not modifiable."

I have no idea why this should be. I created the whole file, nothing is locked that I'm aware of, and every script, field and setting is IDENTICAL to a "sort by project" button (part of the standard template) with the exception that allows the scripts to point to the date field instead of the project field.

I cannot find anything in the help or the forums that has been able to give me even a hint where to start looking for a solution. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

Is there some kind of field that you are trying to assign a value to that happens to be a calculation or is there some kind of validation on it?

You know, I just figured it out. I have a "sort" script that calls on two other scripts, one to sort ascending and one to sort descending. Those scripts in turn call on a global field which calculated when needed so the sort scripts will know which fields to sort. I had the calculation for the global field going to a different field, and hence the error message. It works now, but thanks for taking time to respond to my post!

PS. On a different topic, you wouldn't happen to know if you can get the filesize for a file stored in a container field would you? From what I can tell FileMaker's "get(filesize)" function only gets the size of the entire database and there's no way to tell it you just want the size of a file stored in a particular record.
