From the directions for Server 8, it appears that the server can run some plug-ins -- but the instructions are vague.

Does anybody know how to employ this feature? Can you use any plug-ins, or just special ones? Can you activate a server plug-in from the client? What products are on the market using these plug-ins?

Dump it in the plugins folder on the server install. Specials ones and Yes you can activate a server plug-in from the client. One example is Grab-It from FM Webschool (www.fmwebschool.com).

I personally don't know of any others.

The troi encryptor and Xm Chart plus a custom one I've used on the server and also in IWP and CWP.

On OSX: make sure to check the permissions! Take the xDBC plugin as your guide for that. I've found that you need to set the permissions from the terminal so that the content inside the plugin package is also set properly.
