exclude characters

is it possible to tell a field not to allow certian characters. i know i could set up a filter...but i need the users to not even be allowed to in put characters like / @ &

any help is appreciated

if i were to do that what would i have choose to exclude those? i would assume strict data type...but letters only isn't an option
