Hi, I am trying to make sure all my records are always sorted automatically by project number (ascending). Also Including newly added records that have a lower project number then the previous record. I can get the records to sort but they are unsorted as soon as I re-open filemaker or switch to a different layout. How can I make sure my records are always sorted?

If you script your navigation, you can include a Sort[] step that sorts it however you like.

If you just need to fix it this once (so the records are in the same default order), you can sort them, Export them, then Import them back into a clone.
