Tab access and user rights

Featured Replies

Hi,

While FileMaker 8.5 provides a very granular access control over Records, Layouts, Value Lists, and Scripts, I have not found a way to control access to specific tab of the tab panel control. Because all tabs share the same layout, I cannot use layouts as the way of restricting access.

Is there any way to control access to tabs within FileMaker Accounts and privileges?

I am currently using a popup window as the only way the user may edit the fields. This means an additional click and layout, but it does allow me to run scripts after global fields are filled (for instance, check validity, fill in other fields, check if all fields are not empty, etc.). This is fine for most occasions, but it would be great that in some instance I could use a tab access control instead. This will save me from creating extra layouts and scripts.

Thank you

Not that I am aware of at least. The tabs are UI elements. FileMaker Pro provides some UI security, but nowhere near the protection it affords data elements.

Thank you Steven.

A pity. It could "easily" be implemented using objects, more so, including objects in the list in Accounts and Privileges.

Even if version 9 includes (as it seems) on field exit events, we will still need popup windows to control access to all elements in a tab (unless you implement some very cumbersome field by field control).

Thanks again

I doubt that it would be "easily" implemented. And remember, he who lives by the FileMaker Crystal Ball soon learns to eat ground Case Functions.

I do this with a "bogus" tab panel placed on top of any others. It's the full length of what's "tabbed". it is only as tall as the "tabs". Inside the new tab panel are invisible buttons directing user to "Go to Object" (the tabs underneath). The "forbidden-by-login" is controlled with the check for a custom privilege. Only those accounts that have this privilege can enter!

Since the tab panel picks up objects that it contains, it's very easy to move this "tab-with-buttons" object as a whole. If I need to get to the real tabs in layout mode for developer editing, I just select the new tab panel and move it (count the pixels to move it back!)
