hi trying to adjust one of the basic filemaker example - the Business Tracker, which can be found here

all i'm trying to do is add a new main button module "named" quotes, this is very confusing - hopefully someone can advise me on this.

This is how I would do it:

Go to View- turn on Status area

Go into Layout mode

Copy a button, rename it Quotes and put a new script to it.

What will this new button do?

i need to create a quotes area for initial orders to 'pass' before they become invoices.

Then you could also copy a layout and name it Quotes... have the Quote Button scripted so it goes to the Quotes Layout

On the Quotes layout you could have some buttons that will do certain automated steps (scripts) that will allow the orders to "pass" and then become invoices.
