Newbies Big Show Journal Posted August 15, 2007 Newbies Posted August 15, 2007 I'm a relative newbie to FMP, I understand the basics of layouts and linking layouts. Also, we just upgraded to 8.5 from a VERY old version. I need to learn script writing. I'm trying to update our layouts and clean up the mess that we're working with right now. Is there a website that can teach me the basics? I've been through the help files and I'm just not getting very far. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. TIA, Sue
Tori Mitchell Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I'm not to terribly sure about any websites that have everything from the ground up. There's a lot more to FM than scripts and layouts as well. I think that everyone who deals with FM on a daily basis really needs the Special Edition Using FileMaker 8 from QUE press. It's written by a couple of the guys over at Solient Consulting and, from my standpoint, is easily the best investment that a new user can make. It'll get you from the basics, through the theory, all the way to techniques that some advanced users still have trouble grappling with. Not bad for $30 USD. I know this wasn't exactly what you asked for but, trust me, it's more comprehensive than anything else that I've found.
agtjazz Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I learned TONS from this forum. The members are soooo helpful I also subscribed to VTC.com and have some books like Filemaker Pro the Missing Manual Filemaker 8 Functions and Scripts Desktop Reference Filemaker Bible Try to study examples that others have posted. Once you get in there, you will pick it up
Tori Mitchell Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 The books listed above are top-notch as well. On VTC, you can get the scripting series from John Mark Osborne (he's around here from time to time as well) which I can't reccomend enough for pretty much anyone including myself. Stick around and you'll find tons of places to go for info but it's worth your while to invest in basic training for the best results.
Newbies Mark Kenepp Posted August 15, 2007 Newbies Posted August 15, 2007 I think that everyone who deals with FM on a daily basis really needs the Special Edition Using FileMaker 8 from QUE press. I would second that recommendation! I would also recommend that you find and download any sample files that you can find and look at the scripts (and other functions) in the various solutions and try to understand what is going on. Most of what I have learned has been from this method of "reverse engineering."
