Hi,

I'm a total newbie in need of help, here is what I'm hoping to achieve

I have my main table with the following fields

pet id

supply1

supply2

foodlab

pet loc

Another table named reference with the following fields

pet loc

call number

refer id

How can i add(import or merge) the fields from the reference table to my main table based on the pet loc field.

I tried making a relationship between the tables but that didn't seem to work.

If in my reference table

pet loc call number refer id

------------------------------------------------------

kennel xpi778 33349

house xpi773 84748

wild vv334 494849

missing vv44958 112090

I would like to sync up the 2 tables so the call number and referid fields show up in my main table. so that every row that has pet loc = kennel in my main table would also have call number xpi778 and referid 33349.

I hope that this is something I'll be able to do, but more importantly I hope I didn't make anyone lose a few iq points by reading this. The more I tried to get across what i was trying to do the more confessed I made myself, so I better stop here.

Thanks for any help your able to offer and I'll totally understand anyone posting back "DO WHAT"

A relationship on "pet loc" should work. Why not? As far as "merging" the fields, you must answer the question, "Do I really need a permanent historical record of the call number and refer id data in the main table, or do I just want to see the current values from reference?"

If the former, then you'd use either auto-enter by Lookup or by calculation. Look in the FileMaker Help.

Here are 2 simple files showing the 2 methods.
