In our current environment we are running 8.5 advanced clients with 8 server advanced. Id really like to move to 9 ASAP to take advantage of the new features, however due to time constraints I wont be able to upgrade our server to 9 for a few months.

Is it ok to move the clients to 9 advanced while still running 8 server? any possible got yahs with this set up? (If i remember correctly there were some issues running 8 client with 7 server but i don't remember the specifics) Is this an acceptable practice? I haven't been able to find much information on this.

Any help would be appreciated.

That should be fine. But unless your clients do their own development, they won't need the Advanced version. Just give them regular FileMaker Pro 9.

The big gotcha with FMP 9.0 is the change made to relationships: blank match fields no longer match anything.

This has broken a couple of systems for me, but it's generally not hard to fix (I just added "X" to the end of the multikey so it was no longer empty).

Thanks guys. I have a pretty ridged process I go through when we do an upgrade to limit the surprises so I'll make sure to double check for the empty matched fields.

Just as an FYI Ender, I deploy the advanced version of the product to the users to help me when I need to trouble shoot something. I can log in as an admin at their station and they can walk me through the problem and I still have all my developer tools. I've found that to be very usefull.

Well, I wouldn't do it. Aside from the increased cost per seat, it introduces a possibility of some user causing mischief by running tools or the debugger.

If I need to troubleshoot an account, I can do so from my computer (this is made easier in FM9).
