Count in Checkbox

Greetings

I have a text field that I want to populate with members of a value list. The value list contains a small list (about 10) of accounts, eg, 102, 103, 104 etc.

I can populate the field with the check boxes just fine. What I want to do is count how many items are checked. Ultimately I need to use that number as a divisor in a calculation.

Can I do this or do I need to set up a portal and related field and get a count that way?
