While it would have saved me about 40 minutes of tinkering and resource scouring to know that calculations cannot be used in value lists, further tinkering resulted in using a text field with auto-enter options as a successful value list. In this case its just a first/last name concatenation used as a second field to a primary key value list.

It seems to be working fine.

Is there any difference between an auto-enter calc and a calc field in terms of when they (re)evaluate?

It depends on whether you uncheck the [ ] Allow replace of existing value. In this case, you want to uncheck it. The default is checked, which is the only way it worked in earlier version.

Calculations *can* be used in value lists, but the values must be stored and indexed.
