Can I use FMS 9 to remotely Admin FM 8?

Featured Replies

I have a some clients who have FMS 8 installed, and I do remote administration for them.

Now a client has bought FMS 9.

I was hoping to have both flavor on my machine to do the administration, but it appears that I must unistall FMS 8 before installing FMS 9.

Question: will I still be able to remotely administer my FMS 8 servers?

Thanks,

Sure thing - just make a copy of:

/Applications/FileMaker Server 8/FileMaker Server Admin.app

somewhere else on your system before uninstalling FMS8. Then launch it from the newly copied to location when you wish to admin FMS8 in the future.

You don't need anything on your machine to remotely administer FMS 9 (save Java). FMS 9 is a Java WebStart application that is downloaded to your local machine when you want to administer the server. Therefore you can keep FMS 8 installed on your local machine, including the FMS 8 Server Admin Tool, and when you want to administer an FMS 9 machine you simply open your browser and type in the server's address such as:

http://your.client.server.com:16000/

This will bring up the admin page and trigger a download of the FMS 9 administration app which will open in Java. Because it is a completely different and separate application you can even administer FMS 8 and FMS 9 simultaneously if you'd like.

You only need to copy out the FMS 8 Server Admin Tool if you want to install FMS 9 on your local machine.
