Hi,

I feel like I am behind the 8 ball before I start. ;) I only just bought server8 advanced and fm8.5 advanced and they introduced 9 within a couple of months. I don't think the company will pay for another upgrade but I do need another liscence so my question is if I buy fm 9 advanced will those database run on the 8 advanced server?

Yes, FMS 8 can host databases with FMP 9.0 features.

Note however that FMP 9 as a documented changed of behaviour with relationships, so the files may act differently in the FMP 9.0 client. This is not related to hosting in FMS 9 however.

Your initial purchase did not include maintenance so that you got the new versions when they released??

I host my company's database on FMP Server 8 and just upgraded all the clients to Filemaker Pro 9 and 9 Advanced. I did not upgrade the server. I haven't seen any issues.

YMMV

What is Filemaker's take on this?

Thanks for all the advice not that I am that much wiser :)

and no I can see nothing in any of my documentation that says I get an upgrade.

I bought it from a shop and it wasn't any great special so maybe I learnt a lesson....should have bought it from filemaker?

thanks all

If you purchase the product as part of the FMI license program it usually includes maintenance. That means that you get any new versions that cme out during the maintenance period, usually one year. Check with the Australia FMI Sales Rep.

Unfortunately you have to buy volume licenses to get upgrades. I am only one person with one license although soon to be 2..... so no upgrade and I can't even pay to get a maintenance program.
