I have a total_materials table

and consumed_materials table

in each of those tables there is a field called qty

what would be the calculation that I need to do if every time I add a value to the materials_consumed field, the total_materials field subtracts the amount

I have no idea how you are structured or how the tables are related but I'll make a guess here ...

... from your Total_materials table, add a calculation (result is number) with:

Total_Materials::Qty - Sum (Consumed_Materials::Qty)

This will be an automatically unstored calculation which will update whenever you add a quantity to the Consumed_materials table for the same (assuming again that the tables are related on something like a productID). I am also making an assumption that both the qty fields are number.
