adrain Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Can I import data from excel directly into a particular part of a repeating field. Example, a rainfall field defined as a repeating field with 365 repetitions. I want to import the 3rd days rainfall into the third part of the rainfall field, the 4th days rainfall into the 4th part of rainfall field and so on. Is this possible. Seems a simple thing to do, but no option appears when I try and import data to identify which element to place the data into in the repeating field.
Søren Dyhr Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 No you can't without a vast amount of trickery - The tool is a relational database, which means the "cut" is quite different, where you are used to think of cell's is it going to be individial records. You have to come up with a purpose and context which the wished move of data justifies, if say the purpose is statistical in any way such as a summary report on selections, say a comparison on a year to year basis, a certain relational structure should be constructed to do so in a database. Without knowing this, will it only be a series of suggestions which more or less facilitate what's you're after, but I'm pretty certain that a repeating field have very little to offer, since theoretically are they violation of 1NF if they're used for human understandable data, they should be reserved for utility purposes only! --sd
