Believe it or not ...

I think it's important to know the signs of corruption because it can happen even if a file hasn't crashed. So here's two items which, if you see either of these, trash the file immediately. Trashed files can do STRANGE things and I (being the expert on trash and wonkies) have decided to show you a few I found today in one file.

This was a new file which wasn't being served when it died; it crashed while performing GTRR to an FM table. Look at the status area record counts (see Serious Wonk.gif). It can also retrieve layouts which have NEVER EVER been in the file (Layout.gif). When I created this GTRR script, the layout changed itself to like it does (a BUG which has been there since vs.8). But it seems that its 'lack of identity' allowed itself to be possessed by a layout from ANOTHER FILE. The other file (DATA) was attached as external file reference so I could use a table called CapReq and a layout (CapReq) was created in *this* file. The layout VL_ServType and the table VL_ServType had NEVER EVER been near this new file and suddenly appeared after the crash (view popup vs. script-step). :mickey: Believe it or not ...

Zip removed due to lack of interest (see shots below). :smirk:

Lazy boy! Okay, for you Alex, anything ...

I hope they're large enough, I'd not a graphics queen.

Lol talk about serious wonk. What happens when you add a record?

Speaking of corruption, I did a "fraud awareness" seminar a couple of months ago (I work for Government, we have to do these things) and guess what the best indicator is for somebody who is committing fraud?

They never take leave.

I am VERY VERY good about setting an original wierded file aside before beginning to play with it but ... I didn't in this case. I immediately ran Save A Copy As Compacted (smaller) and the record numbers returned to normal. But the layout issue remained in the file and I have set THAT version aside for further play (or if anyone wants to see the original). Unfortunately, there isn't much else to play with since it's a pretty-much bare-bones file. The wonky layout spec remains in it.

When I create a new record, it seems fine. That doesn't mean I'll keep the file but, I had just created it to attach another table for identifying missed commit numbers and a few other things then I planned to delete it anyway. Grabbing another file's layout is the strangest thing I've EVER seen and I've seen some doozies (phones moving across the layout, etc.).

I love this kinda stuff; probably because it's strange like, ahem, me.

Hi Vaughan,

Data has a way of revealing secrets, that's for sure!! And in the case of THIS data, it revealed twice the number of records - too bad that's not dollars! Hmmmm, I wonder if an accountant can say, "Well, someone on FM forums says the record numbers can increase. It's called the wonky-factor ... yeah, that's it ... $30,000 didn't disappear, it's just that FM SAID there was $30,000 but those records never existed. Ummm, yean, that's it...

Lol I just moved and lost the q key on my keyboard, so any time i quote someone, they had better appreciate it.

Well, I'd almost be a fraud committer, but a) i'm special : and : i get a week and a half off starting Christmas eve lol and c) it's only December 19 and ... and d) the whole damned system is corrupt.

I'm sure LaRetta also gets a nice break... hah, i was going to say on a beach but then i remembered America's in the middle of winter.

I see you edited that post, could've been interpreted in the wrong way LOL.

Ummm, yeah. In fact, I almost deleted it but thought that would be more obvious than a quiet behind-the-scenes edit.

But YOU brought everyone's attention back to it anyway. ROFLMAO!!
