mikemccloskey Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Years ago I created a multi-file, related solution in FMP 6 and have been using it happily since. I have decided to upgrade to 9 and have noticed that 9 has tables. I am confused about this. Do, or can tables take the place of related files? In other words can I redesign the system so that I have all functionality in one database? I am an intermediate user. Thanks for your help
Stuart Taylor Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Yes you can treat tables in a similar way to files in 6. Use the relationships graph to link tables together. Add occurances of tables on that graph for logical reasons and to have two instances of a table in one chain. Have a play you will find the relationships graph much more flexible that the old relationship list. best Stuart
CobaltSky Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Mike, Just to add to then info Stuart has provided, after you migrate your solution to v9, if you are using FileMaker Pro Advanced, you will be able to import tables (from the various files of your solution) into a single file. If you're using FileMaker Pro 9 (ie not the Advanced version) you can achieve a similar effect by a more indirect method, by choosing File>Import Records, then selecting New Table as the target (ie from the menu at the upper right of the Import Field Mapping dialog. In either case, as Stuart has mentioned, you'd then need to rebuild relationships in the v9 file to use the new consolidated (all-in-one-file) tables. :wink2:
mikemccloskey Posted December 22, 2007 Author Posted December 22, 2007 Thanks guys. I have Advanced 8.5. Will it be able to import tables directly like 9?
CobaltSky Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Hi Mike, Yes, the methods of importing tables that I mentioned have been available since the release of v8. I referred to v9 in this context because your earlier post mentioned upgrading to 9. :wink2:
