j0dyj Posted October 23, 2000 Posted October 23, 2000 Can anyone tell me if it is possible to sort portal rows by a number field? I have a priority field and would like to be able to sort it so it reads in numeric order in the portal. The only way that I have found involves import and export and I'm hoping there is an easier solution.

You sort the relationship. ------------------ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Kurt Knippel Consultant Database Resources mailto:[email protected] http://www.database-resources.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
j0dyj Posted October 23, 2000 Author Posted October 23, 2000 Thanks! Sorry to be a pain, but can you be more specific? I don't think the relationship I currently have will work because it doesn't relate one to one, but one to many... If I can relate them one-to-one as well, how specifically would I then go about sorting? Is it a script or a calculation, etc?

Then with the file open, choose File->Define Relationships, select the relationship that the portal is tied to and click "Edit". In the bottom right of the dialog box is a check box for "Sort related records" Click it and a Specify Sort window comes up. Move your number field to the right hand column, select to have it sort either ascending or descending, and click OK, then click OK again, and then click Done. Now, all of this will only make sense if you're using FMP5 (which we're assuming you are because that's where you posted the question). However, if you're not, then the only way I know to sort the portal is going to be the export/delete all/import method. However, check out www.databasepros.com. There might be other, perhaps easier techniques, there. Chuck
Vaughan Posted October 25, 2000 Posted October 25, 2000 Relationships can be sorted in FMP 4.0 and FMP 4.1 as well. Same deal.
Robbydobbs Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 I just wanted to say thank you for all the advise I get from you guys. I had the same problem and did a search on sorting portals and you guys were able to clear up the problem right away. Thanks again for always having the answers to the problems.
