Jarvis Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I have a database that I use to help manage documents at my cabinetshop. This database is hosted on a web based dedicated server. As I understand it, this is being run with Filemaker Server Advanced. I can host up to 50 databases with up to 5 simultaneous users at a time. I am having problems sharing data via container fields. If I insert a PICTURE into the container field the data is visible from all client stations. If I insert a FILE or a QUICKTIME the data is visible from the client station that uploaded the data but it is not visible from any other client stations. When this information is addressed from other client stations there is an error message that says" "This file cannot be found:filename". This is definitely a handicap because I would like to be able to share PDF and other documents. Does this information need to be stored as a remote reference on another file or is there some other way to do this? Thanks, Jarvis
Steven H. Blackwell Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Some media types are not supported as multi-user as inserted elements. You've discovered what a few of them are. The Web Viewer possibly can be used to asssit you here. Steven
Jarvis Posted January 20, 2008 Author Posted January 20, 2008 Thanks Steven. With your interpretative insight and my own practice, I'm coming to accept the limitations of using the server side of filemaker. At one time my goal was produce this monster brain for my cabinetshop. My target now is to just minimize the cost of navigating between disparate databases. As for certain media types not being supported as inserted elements: I don't think I am too out of line for wanting this to support something as generally used as PDF format. But then again, I also think filemaker should be capable of generating simple charting without the need for plugins. Thanks for your help (as usual) Jarvis

I agree. There are, however, some things about both PDF's and Quicktimes that just do not work. FMI knows about these. Steven
