Record Copy Problem

Ok If I copy a record it should copy the contents of fields but this does not happen, originally I wanted an unused field to have a value N/A so if it isn't used it is obviously not needed.

However the auto complete seems to then errase the data when copying the record for the copy at least, not the original.....

So how do I keep a new record with the handy feature of displaying N/A but obviously copy data to a new record when you copy the record, this does not make much sense to me....
