Date does not format correctly

I am inserting the date symbol // in a mail merge letter. In the "format date" menu I have selected to show the date in words, eg December 1, 2008, yet when I print the letters the date appears as 12/1/2008.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you select the text block in which the date symbol is merged, when applying the date format?
