Is it possible to change the format of a pop up menu?

Currently I have a menu that has over 40 items which produces a long thin menu with scroll arrows at top and bottom. Is it possible to change the format so that almost the full width of the screen is used and the box is more "wide and short" than "long and thin"?

Have you tested/compared the "pop-up menu" to the "Drop-down List"? It might work more like you want?
