Can I Add a Different Image to Each Record via Form?

Featured Replies

Hello. I'm using FM 9.0.

I'm not sure if this question should be in the Value Lists section or not, but here goes…

I'd like to create a form that will let me put a different photo in each record. So far, I haven't figured out how to do that.

Is this possible? If so, can someone tell me what the procedure is, or perhaps point me to a tutorial or demo on the web?

Thank you! Jd

I moved it to Container Fields, as that is also the answer. It is a type of field which can hold pictures, also files. First you need to create a field of this type, and put it on your layout. Then put your cursor in it. Then go up to the Insert menu, in the menu bar, and choose Picture...

In the dialog, at the lower left, you will see an option to [x] Store only a reference to the file. If it is checked, FileMaker will not store the picture internally, but will just show the picture of the image file, at that particular location. If you move the file, the picture will go away (though the path will remain).

Conversely if you uncheck that option FileMaker will store the picture internally, so that it doesn't matter if you move the file later. This makes the whole thing more portable, but adds (at least) the file size of the image to the FileMaker file.

There is a fair amount of info in the FileMaker Help files about Container fields, though there are some tips and tricks which are not there. There are also lots of posts here at fmforums about container fields. If you are in a networked environment, there are many considerations, especially about storage.
