Alternate Background Not Working

I have a layout where I set up a light gray background for the body. I then, in the part definition, check the alternate background and choose a different shade of gray AND the fill pattern = (description) two squares - white square behind, black square in front.

And the preview shows the entire body as light gray. The alternate background isn't even being acknowledged. What can I look at?

I figured it out...my view was set as "Form" and not "List" view.

How are you viewing your records?

The alternating background works on list view, so if you are viewing your records in form view you will not see the alternating background.
