Thanks to some help and encouragement by Comment. I don't know how to link this to a short thread under Relationships, but this is my result...

See attached file. It's ugly, but seems to be totally functional!

One important thing I haven't done yet, which is not really the point here, is automatically update gParentID. That's a no brainer for me now, and I know I can carry the logic from this study file over into my actual working file.

I do think that my mess here can be cleaned up. If there are any ideas, I would love to hear them!
