Newbies Tom Carlson Posted March 24, 2008 Newbies Posted March 24, 2008 This is an extreme newbie question: I'm making a simple database for my home library and was wondering how to create a field consisting of a checkbox that would place a webding or Zapf dingbat type checkmark within the box when clicked by the user. Checking the box would indicate that a book had been read. I would then add the pages of the book in that record to a grand total of pages read for all books in the database. Thanks in advance, Tom Carlson
mr_vodka Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 How about something like this? Books_Webding.zip
aldipalo Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Hey John: Funny I should find this posting as well. For the life of me I can not get the checkbox to work. So let me ask my stupid questions here. I set the field to WingDings, but how do I get the box to show checked and unchecked? When I try to copy your field over and change the font to wingdings it sets it back to whatever I had the field previously set to.
mr_vodka Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Look again on the other post. http://www.fmforums.com/forum/showpost.php?post/285752/ It is under number formatting. Right click the number field in my sample where the wingding is.
Newbies Tom Carlson Posted March 24, 2008 Author Newbies Posted March 24, 2008 Thanks, John for that file. It works exactly as I would like it to. Now to study it and figure out how it works so I can emulate that in my database. In addition to the White Paper you mentioned, do you have any recommendations for books for the novice? I have done quite a bit of programming in AppleScript and VBA for Excel, but am just getting started with FM (dammit Jim, I'm a music editor, not an IT guy!) Thanks again for the help, Tom Carlson
mr_vodka Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 I know Ray's Book just came out. Geoff's Book is pretty good from what I heard, and knowing Geoff, it should be easy to follow. Also there are a few video tutorials on FM's website. If you want to buy training material, John Mark Osborne has some good ones as well. Matt has easy to follow videos over at FileMaker Magazine
Newbies Tom Carlson Posted March 25, 2008 Author Newbies Posted March 25, 2008 Thanks, John. Ordered Ray's book and The Missing Manual book. Seems like a good place to start. Tom
