Text or Number type for Key Fields?

I've never seen any definitive evidence for choosing Number fields over Text for primary key fields. Either works with the Auto-Enter options for serial numbers...

Is there a performance and/or logical advantage towards picking one over the other?

I prefer to use it as a text field, mostly because it can start with zeros and has really zeros ( not only virtually or visually )
