Opening PDFs from Container Fields

Featured Replies

I have a database that is hosted on a remote web based server.

This database has a container field that holds PDF files.

I am able to insert (embed) the PDF file and I can see it from any client station but I cannot open it.

How do I make this happen?

You can click into the field, then use Export Field Contents, and check the [x] Open file option. This is available as a script step also.

Thanks a lot Fenton,

This is a big deal to me.

I spend the first half of my day at home and only work at the shop for part of each day (the crew gets more done that way).

A big issue in manufacturing is setting policy for releasing information onto the shop floor. You need to have enough drawings available so that the crew has something to do but just because something is available to build does not mean it should be built.

Flowing documents based on controllable criteria will go a long way to controlling other events.

Thanks again.

One thing. In my example the container field is enterable, so that I could Insert file/pictures manually. But you could make it non-enterable; the export script still works. Then you could not click in the field and use Export Field Contents (and you'd need a script or another layout to Insert the file/picture). Since you mentioned controlling export.
