Hi,

I am currently evaluating FileMaker Pro 9 to see whether I can redevelop my father-in-law's aging Paradox application to another PC based system.

One reason I looked at FileMaker is that I recently bought a MacBook and without all the fuss of running VMWare etc.. wanted to develop on my preferred platform but still supply something compatable with Windows etc.. and whilst Web based is one option, his preference to have PC based applications as his user count is only himself and the fuss on installing web/Apache remotely is more hassle than it's worth...

So far have been impressed with what I can do without really needing to resort to anything too heavy beyond creating scripts in ScriptMaker and have been considering purchasing FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced so that he can have a runtime version whilst I use the full version to develop/support his applications.

One thing I've noticed is that on the FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced it states that access to remote sources (i.e. MySQL) for Runtime users is not permitted. Are there any alternatives ?

As I was thinking it would be good if my app was deployed on the laptop that runs around with my father-in-law, but also have the ability to upload and use a SQL back-end when he's in the office from his Tower PC which is effectively his small office server that gets backed up, handles faxes etc..

Regards,

Jonathan

You could set up some kind of scripted/automated import/export routines. Better I think to just get him his own copy of FileMaker Pro.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately giving my father-in-law too much access is a dangerous thing but at least I understand the option is limited to Import/Export

You can control the access via FileMaker in all kinds of ways, that shouldn't be a problem.
