I believe there are plug ins that allow you to insert a pdf into a field, and the field would display a thumbnail of the first page of the pdf. User could click on the pdf and download, save it to the desktop, etc.

Please provde me your views if such plugin exist.

This should work out in both Windows and Mac platforms.

With version 8.5 or later you can use the webviewer to view the entire PDF inside FileMaker. This works well if the PDFs are stored on a local server. Just use the path to the PDF as the address.
