July 8, 200817 yr Brought into a project here at work cleaning up some FileMaker databases. One issue right now is several of us run FileMaker Pro 9 from a system using Terminal Services (Win2003) Any time we open a database, a nice little window pops up stating: "FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already using FileMaker Pro on this computer" Is there any way to make that not pop up? It gets annoying clicking it how ever many times to open a database.
July 8, 200817 yr This dialog appears because you are opening a file with sharing enabled but your FileMaker Pro client has sharing disabled. There are two options here, depending on your desired outcome: 1) disable sharing for the file 2) enable sharing for FileMaker Pro Both options can be accessed under the File > Sharing menu item.
July 8, 200817 yr Author from what I can tell, some files need to be shared - so what's the outcome if I enable sharing for FileMaker Pro
July 8, 200817 yr Um... how exactly are the files being shared? The files should either be shared by FileMaker Server (the forum this question is posted in) or by a specific FileMaker Pro client so designated. I would strongly discourage sharing by "first client to open the file" as that is a recipe for sadness. Under a TS environment you should be using FileMaker Server to host your files. If you're getting this message for files supposedly hosted by FMS then it would indicate you're opening them directly from the volume rather than through the "Open Remote" dialog.
July 8, 200817 yr Author There is a remote FM server running. We connect to our terminal server and open a .FP7 file with FM-Pro. Somehow that file "opens" and displays files from the server. As far as I know, this only happens on the Terminal server. Trust me when I say our site has a FM database like you've never seen before, and it's scary. Edited July 8, 200817 yr by Guest
July 8, 200817 yr Each terminal service user needs to have their own copy of the file. Which probably means they are opening the file directly, and not going through the Open->Remote dialog. Instead, give the users an opener file to double-click on.
July 9, 200817 yr When using Terminal Services or Citrix with FileMaker Server you must use a volume license installation of FIleMaker Pro. Please see the Terminal Services Tech Brief as well as Tech Info 5442. Steven
July 9, 200817 yr Author Most users here use FM from their desktop systems. The developers have enough stuff running on their desktops, so they use the TS. Everyone has their own copy of the .fp7, which when open is set to run a script to open a different database off the server.
