aislinn Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Hi there! I am desperately trying to make a backup to a location different than the server itself. The Filemaker server is running on Mac OSX; the file & print server I want to back up to is running on Windows. I've tried everything I think: starting with "filewin:/" starting with "file:///" starting with "/" I can access the folder I want to copy to from Finder, so there shouldn't be a connection problem. I've tried using the filepath based on Safari, the filepath and the server path specified in the Finder information, etc. I ALWAYS end the filepath with a slash, so the problem can't be there. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas? Isabelle
Steven H. Blackwell Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 IIRC, you cannot backup to a remote volume from FileMaker Server on Mac OS. Take a look at this White Paper from Wim Decorte about pushing out backups. As a general rule you should avoid making the initial backup to a remote volume. Steven
Amazin1 Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 We have been here before and I still do not understand the reasoning behind not allowing backups to remote locations without pushing (as was able to be done prior to 7). While I respect Old Advance Man's knowledge and ability (I have learned much from other posts that have been made), I do not just accept things based on somebody just saying that is the way it is, end of story. In addition, the White Paper referred to only addresses Windows servers and not Macs. If I have to push the data for remote back-up, let me just back it up remotely without need to add push. I seem to be missing something here that the gurus seem to understand but I don't. Incredibly frustrating!

Steven H. Blackwell Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 There is a specific section of that Backups and More Backups paper devoted to OS X. If you can't find it, let us know. I will be speaking with Wim Decorte this afternoon anyway and I'll mention this to him. Steven
Amazin1 Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Went to their site and did not see anything related to back-ups on Macs. If you can direct me to right place it would be appreciated.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 It's in the downloads section of Wim's web site and the Mac OS discussion is towards the end of the paper. Steven
